Get ready to fall in love with flamenco all over again with this magnificent film.  Carlos Saura brings to us breath-taking performances by Spain’s most renowned Flamenco artists today.

The film is part of the San Diego Latino Film Festival line up. Scheduled screenings are March 15 at 6pm,  March 19 at 8pm and a third date TBA.

Dancer Fanny Ara  has choreographed an evening of flamenco and Spanish classical dance that pushes the boundaries of tradition. Responding to the work of visual artist Charlotte Kruk featured in the Project Space Gallery exhibition Cease & Desist, Fanny’s re-imagining of flamenco and the paso doble adds a cheeky and whimsical twist that strongly contradicts the inherently serious tone of these dance forms.

Co-presented by Bay Area Flamenco Partnership
the performance features Ara and her troupe of professional dancers, plus two special guests: dancer and Emmy Award winner Yaelisa; and New York based pianist Gonzalo Grau.

From San Francisco:  Hwy 280 South. Exit Hwy 85 South. Drive 4.1 miles and exit at Saratoga Avenue. Turn right onto Saratoga Avenue Drive 1.8 miles to downtown Saratoga. Turn left at light onto Hwy 9 / Saratoga – Los Gatos Road. Drive 1/3 mile and turn right onto Montalvo Road. Continue approximately 1 mile to Montalvo grounds.

From Oakland:  Hwy 880 South to Hwy 17 South. Take the Los Gatos, Saratoga, Hwy 9 Exit. Drive 3.5 miles. Turn left onto Montalvo Road. Continue approximately 1 mile to Montalvo grounds.

From San Jose:  Hwy 280 North to Hwy 17 South. Take the second Los Gatos Exit (Los Gatos, Saratoga, Hwy 9). Continue 3.5 miles. Turn left onto Montalvo Road. Continue 1 mile to Montalvo grounds.

From Santa Cruz:  Hwy 17 North. Take the Los Gatos, Saratoga, Hwy 9 Exit. Drive back over the freeway and continue 3.5 miles. Turn left onto Montalvo Road. Continue approximately 1 mile to Montalvo grounds.

Parking:

As you enter the Main Gate you will first arrive at Parking Lot 1 Continue through Lot 1 up the
road past the Front Lawn. You can use Parking Lots 3 and 4 on the left side of the Villa. Please drive slowly through the estate, as we have many visitors walking the grounds including children, the elderly, and deer.

We are very excited to announce FLAMENCO GITANO: two nights, two completely different shows featuring some of the finest Gypsy flamenco artists from Spain. As recipients of Bay Area Flamenco Partnership emails, you are among the first to know about these unique events.

We have been working for well over a year to bring these artists for a tour of several US cities including Berkeley, California. Other venues include the Skirball Center at NYC and Boston’s Berklee Performance Center.

Bay Area events take place on November 16th and 17th at the Thrust Stage (Berkeley Repertory Theatre).

Tuesday, Nov. 16th dancer Pepe Torres (of Son de la Frontera) presents Homenaje, a centennial tribute to his grandfather, Gypsy singer Joselero de Moron, with special guest artist Juan del Gastor.

Wednesday, Nov. 17th direct from Sevilla Angelita Vargas & Jairo Barrull present Gitaneria, a multi-generational exploration of the Gypsy roots of flamenco dance.

Details on the Artists

Widely celebrated for his extraordinary depth in the Gypsy dance tradition, PEPE TORRES is a polyrhythmic powerhouse whose superb footwork provided the main percussive support for the award-winning ensemble Son de la Frontera. Pepe is known as a sensitive dancer who exudes the essence of his heritage with unmistakable personality and strength.

He has toured extensively with Manuela Carrasco, Farruquito, Juana Amaya, and Antonio Canales, among others, and first came to Berkeley with David Serva & Miguel Funi in the late 90s. He is a favorite at flamenco festivals throughout Europe including recent performances at the Flamenco Festival de Nimes and the 2010 Festival de Jerez.

The Bay Area Flamenco Partnership is proud to present HOMENAJE, a centennial tribute to Torres’ grandfather, legendary Gypsy flamenco singer Joselero de Moron. A showcase of Pepe’s mastery of all aspects of flamenco music and dance, HOMENAJE is a celebration of his family’s unique contributions to the history of flamenco which also includes his grand-uncle, legendary guitarist Diego del Gastor.

Guest artist, JUAN DEL GASTOR, is a family elder and direct link to Torres’ Gypsy flamenco legacy.  Heir to the guitar-playing of his uncle Diego, Juan has accompanied such flamenco giants as Fernanda de Utrera, Juan Talega, and Miguel Funi. He is also a highly charismatic singer and dancer who transmits a contagious sense of flamenco aire.

The Bay Area Flamenco Partnership is proud to present GITANERIA featuring Gypsy flamenco dance icon ANGELITA VARGAS and the young, dynamic JAIRO BARRULL who join together for a multigenerational exploration of the Gitano roots of flamenco. GITANERIA honors the passing down of flamenco traditions from generation to generation in the Gypsy community where dance is an expression of cultural identity.

Angelita Vargas was a featured artist in the groundbreaking production, Flamenco Puro which toured the US in the late 1980s, coming to San Francisco for a month-long run. An icon of Gypsy flamenco dance, she was recently featured in the Farruco family’s show Gitanas that toured extensively to wide acclaim throughout Europe.

Jairo Barrull is universally recognized as one of the most talented young men representing the traditional Gypsy style of flamenco dance. He is  the great-grandnephew of legendary guitarist Diego del Gastor and son of dancer Ramon Barrull. As inseparable teenage pals, he and Farruquito performed together for a number of years, coming to the US several times. He also toured extensively with acclaimed dancer Juana Amaya (his cousin) and appeared at UC Berkeley’s Zellerbach hall in 2003 with Pepe Torres, Juana Amaya and Farruquito. Jairo performs regularly to critical acclaim in flamenco festivals all over the world, most recently in the 2010 Mont de Marsan flamenco Festival.
